Friends of Chris Cornell have come together to form a tribute supergroup named King Ultramega. The group aims to raise money for charity by releasing covers of his songs.
In memory of the late Soundgarden frontman who passed away in 2017, King Ultramega will feature various musicians recording new versions of his tracks. The funds raised will be donated to the MusiCares organization.
Metal Allegiance member Mark Menghi, the organizer of the project, mentioned, "There is not a singular moment in time that led to this project. It was a trail of events that led to the formation of King Ultramega, paying tribute to the voice of a generation."
The initial lineup of King Ultramega includes Menghi on bass, William DuVall from Alice In Chains on vocals, Bill Kelliher from Mastodon on guitar, and Charlie Benante from Anthrax on drums. They have recorded a cover of "Rusty Cage" from Soundgarden's 1991 album "Badmotorfinger."
The upcoming lineup will feature Kim Thayil, Cornell's bandmate from Soundgarden. Thayil expressed his honor to be part of the project, stating, "I'm super honored to record alongside all the amazing musicians appearing on the King Ultramega project. I'm equally proud that it celebrates Soundgarden in this tribute to the songwriting of Chris. Ultra-admirably, everyone's participation is supporting the work of the MusiCares Foundation."
In related news, a new Soundgarden album featuring Chris Cornell might be released soon. Bassist Ben Shepherd revealed that there is an album they worked on with Cornell before his passing, which is yet to be named. It may see the light of day in the future.
Reflecting on the anniversary of Cornell's death, Shepherd shared on Instagram his thoughts about the unreleased album and the impact of Cornell's voice and music on him and the band. The post highlighted the creative process and the emotional connection to the music and Chris Cornell's legacy.
